Twitter is often misunderstood amongst PR newbies and marketers that are more concerned with exposure than influence. Here are a few ideas, principles, and guidelines for Twitter users:
Note: I hate the term "rules" for Twitter, as it reeks of the kind of social media charlatans that spam and harass people via Twitter. There are no rules for Twitter, but like every other communication platform, there are good and bad ways to get your message out there.- Your follower to following ratio is infinitely more important than your total follower count. One can be bought, and disappears when you close your two way connection. The other will stay with you regardless of whether you listen to them or not.
- Using Twitter exclusively to post links to your blog is a bankrupt and useless strategy.
- Always keep Twitter personal. The minute your Twitter account becomes business only, you've lost the chance to truly talk to people.
- As part of above, give your Twitter account your real name, not the name of your company. Put your company in the description, or in the title (but only after your own name.)
- The less you tweet, the more influential and valuable each tweet becomes.
- Don't take things too seriously.
Got any more? I plan on doing a series of these, so fire away in the comments if you've got any ideas that you think apply to Twitter.
